Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within - Opinion

All fans of adventure games know that the saga of the shadow hunter is a milestone of the genre, and not for nothing; the second episode, in my opinion, the best demonstration of this, a long title, thrilling, always capable in keeping us interested to the plot, which is expertly blend with  historical facts and fantasy .

GK2 picks up the story after about a year from the first chapter, Gabriel after discovering his ancestry, retires to the castle left by his uncle Wolfgang in Germany; here he tries to write his new book after the success of "the Voodoo Murders", until the locals asking for help for the murders apparently caused by some wolves escaped from the zoo, but obviously there is something much darker and  terrible under this;
And it is here that begins an adventure full of charm, mystery with a grain horror  that is not indifferent.

The most important thing (aside from the technical sector) is the ability to play as the assistant Gabriel, Grace Nakimura, in different chapters of the game; We have a different perspective to the events and  based  much more on research and study than the others.

  The interface has been turned upside down compared to the first: here we have only one pointer, then the character will automatically do the required action without all the icons of "sins of the fathers" which gave it a bit of confusion.

The technical sector is exceptional, abandoned the 2d of the first title in The Beast Within opted for the FMV (Full Motion Video) This is a little used technique in the field of point and click (probably due to the high budget required) and it is in a nutshell the use of real actors set in motion behind a blue background.
The result is truly magnificent and, more importantly, the interaction with objects and characters is excellent, probably GK2 is the best title in FMV.

Nothing to say even to the interpretation of the actors; the two main protagonists Dean Erickson and Joanne Takahashi recite very well, however, stands out among all the outstanding Peter J.Lucas / von Glower.

As we know Robert Holmes (husband of Jensen) is a great artist and he even wrote an entire opera here;
Music so beautiful as always, the sound effects are no different.

Defects are hard to find, perhaps only a few interactions with the environment and the objects are not very logical; another negative point may be the fact that you must install a patch amateur to have subtitles, but just if you want to nitpick.

So, if by contradiction you did not know, I must tell you that the second Gabriel Knight, as the first and the third is an adventure that absolutely must be played, even if you are not a fan of the genre. If you still have this serious gap, the trilogy is available on gog.com.
